The paper presents a mathematical model of the early larval stage, from spawn to the resorption of the yolk-sac, of the anchovy, Engraulis encrasicolus, of the Bay of Biscay. The model describes the temperature-dependent growth and drift of passive larvae by the currents and vertical turbulence. A numerical code has been built and numerous simulations, fed by both biological (egg surveys by AZTI-San Sebastian, Spain, and IFREMER, France) and physical (circulation model by IFREMER-Brest, France) data, were undertaken. Their main features are presented and discussed here, and some conclusions on the possible utilization of the results in improving estimates of anchovy stocks by the daily egg production method are drawn. |

In the context of an increasing demand and a declining supply from fisheries, worldwide aquaculture production of abalone has greatly increased in the last decades. Selective breeding has been initiated to improve growth in major abalone species. In France, the abalone production was initiated 30 years ago and struggles to develop. This CIFRE PhD co-financed by France Haliotis, the only French hatchery in activity, was initiated to study early domestication process of farmed abalone population and to provide knowledge required to design a selective breeding program adapted to this company. Wild and farmed populations were compared, showing that, until 2013, farmed and wild abalone presented similar performances. However, lower physiological and behavioural... |

The growth of oysters (Crassostrea gigas) is modeled in order to study the trophic capacity of the Bay of Marennes Oléron. Total seston and amount of protids, lipids, and carbohydrates converted to energy are the environmental factors taken into account. Time series of these variables are derived during 2 yr with a daily time step from a linear regression including the tidal velocity, the height of the water column, and the wind velocity. A model of the energetic budget based on assimilation and respiration terms and depending on the previous time series is run to simulate the individual growth of an oyster. The knowledge of the number of oysters, the flow of water entering the bay, and the volume of the bay allows us then to estimate that 7% of the... |

Since 2010, planktonic algae Alexandrium minutum, cause of the PSP (Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning) syndrome, has been proliferating in early summer in the bay of Daoulas, within the roadstead of Brest. During this internship, a model has been designed in order to derive these blooms from physical parameters (temperature, irradiance, nutrient supply, dilution rate …). In the model, A.minutum competes with 50 other plankton species with randomly attributed optimal temperature and nutrient uptake abilities. It turns out to reproduce well the bloom of 2012, with a correct date of maximum concentration and a relevant order of magnitude. It reproduces the order of magnitude of 2013 concentrations, but the bloom then is too spread in time around the maximum.... |

After a literature overview of growth models applied to intensively cultured fishes, a new one is proposed for assistance in rearing operations, with following characteristics. A simple and integratable mathematic expression simulates growth while eliminating individual weight influence. It gives way to a specific growth general definition. Temperature action mode on growth speed is simulated by substraction of two exponential functions. An automatic calculation method of thermal parameters is proposed. The torpid action of low temperatures is considered. Feeding ration influences growth through simple rules which are explicitly taken in account by mean of a two parameters function. The other growth factors, more difficult to seize, are expressed through a... |

Oyster production of the Marennes-Oléron Basin is simulated using a model integrating phytoplankton growth, oyster growth and horizontal transport of suspended matter. Firstly the simulations are compared to the measurements. At season scale, the phytoplankton and nitrates evolution are well predicted by the model. In compensation, the model does not simulated well the spring/neap tidal variability of the phytoplankton. Secondly, the phytoplancton and oyster productions are calculated as a function of the nitrates river inputs. Biotic capacity of the basin appears to be particulary influenced by these nutrients during summer. On the other hand, spatial variability of the impact of the nitrates variation is clearly shown, the primary productions of the... |

The notion of penaeid shrimp postlarvae quality, which implies a survival potential, is still a subjective parameter. The zootechnical criteria and the visual observations are not sufficient to evaluate the physiological condition of the hatchery reared postlarvae. The resistance of postlarvae to salinity shocks is a representative criteria of their condition. The goal of this study is to present a non-linear regression model at 2 variables (size, salinity) for the P. vannamei postlarvae resistance to salinity shocks. Between the second and the twentieth day after metamorphosis; 5 salinity shocks (20, 15, 10, 5 and 20/00) were tested daily, each one with 50 postlarvae. Survival rates were recorded after 2 hrs. Concurrently, the postlarvae growth in the... |

Diversity and abundance of the benthic fauna in the Channel Sea have favoured the development of fisheries, particularly those of shellfish (scallop, warty venus, common cockle, dog cockle, banded carpet shell, surf clam...) and also attracted the interest of scientists. Some large scientific programs were carried out in the seventies to study benthos distribution in this area. Among the main listed bivalves, the dog cockle (Glycymeris glycymeris) and the banded carpet shell (Paphia rhomboïdes) are particularly widespread in the Channel Sea and in the "Golfe Normand-Breton", where they are ones of the most abundant species in terms of biomass. In view of their halieutic interest and the existence of an important database describing their distribution,... |

The summer mortality patterns was studied in 1996 on the Ronce-les-Bains oyster bank (175 ha), located on the southern part of the Bay Marennes-Oleron (Atlantic coastline). Studies on growth, sexual maturation, survival rates and environmental variables were compared at fifteen experimental sites (on- and off-bottom culture). After 7 months, cumulative mortality reached 8-19 and 23-33% for off-bottom and on-bottom culture, respectively which is significantly higher for the latter case. A seasonal mortality trend was noted, with a significant increase related to air temperature greater than 20 degrees C and with a significant pre-spawning glycogen catabolism. Based on soft tissue flesh growth results from both types of culture, several empirical models were... |

The cupped oyster, Crassostrea gigas was first introduced in France in 1967 [13]. On the Atlantic coast, the Marennes Oléron Bay (Figure 1) is the first European oyster culture basin with a cupped oyster (Crassostrea gigas) stock of 110,000 tons and an annual output of 30,000 to 40,000 tons. The Ronce oyster bank, located at the south of the bay (Figure 1), is made of 1,600 concessions spread out over 175 ha. It produces 8,000 to 10,000 tons of cupped oysters each year. In Japan, Crassostrea gigas has been cultivated for more than 1,000 years (Farley, 1992). Since the beginning of the 1960's, oyster mortality has multiplied throughout the world (Imaï et al., 1965; Sinderman, 1976; Mackin, 1961; Beattie et al, 1980). In the 60's and 70's, Japan and the west... |

The Japan oyster: Crassostrea gigas have been imported on the french coasts in the seventies and from this time it adapted to this environment. Since, it became the main oyster producted in France. But ,since twenty years C. gigas presents an anormaly and important mortality eah year in the period of summer. The syndrome known as summer mortality, appears particulary in mid-june. This mortality can affected 50% of the culture. Many studies have brought elements in the comprehension of the condition of apparition of this mortalilities. Temperature seems to play an important rule with reproductive maturation. But also, the deep ofwater could be associated to this mass mortality. The study began in march 2003 and characterize more precisely the summer... |

The 1999 monitoring of the C. gigas mortality rates showed a 32 to 40% loss for the on-bottom rearings located on the Ronce-Perquis oyster bank. In 1997, the averaged mortality rate varied between 23 and 29% without significant site effect. These mortality rates were ranging from 17 to 32% in 1998 with significant limited mortality rate on site 4 (17%). However, those rates were underestimated by 7 to 8%, based on our 1999 study, Actually, the spatial distribution for these rates on 2 experimental sites divided into 25 subunits demonstrated a large variability ranging from 17-37% and 22-56% for sites 1 and 2, respectively. In spite this large variability, the mortality rates results were larger on the muddy bottom site. In contrast to site 1, the oysters... |

The Marennes-Oléron Bay is the first cupped oyster production site (35,000 tons/year). For more than 10 years, this species has suffered chronic mortality episodes. A research program has been developed since 1994 in association with the professional sector, in order to try and explain these mortalities. |

In the scope of the Morest program, 3 series of bi-parental families of cupped oyster consisting of full and half-sib have been created in 2001, and then studied on a regular basis on several sites over the summer period. In October, major survival differences had been demonstrated between the 3 families. The average survival rate for the half-sib families monitored on the three sites varies from 17 to 97 %. Some of them showed high mortality for the three sites, indicating a strong genetic basis (h2 = 0.81 - 0.29) to the variations observed regarding survival. To a lesser extent, growth differences between the studied half-sib families indicate a weaker heritability for this character. .... |
